In between these tread voids, stone ejectors are implemented to protect the rubber.
To increase the stiffness of the tire itself, Nitto also reinforces the tread blocks on the foundation so tread flex is much reduced and because in this type of application it is important for tires to stay stiff and provide up to F-load rating for your heavy duty trucks.
As for the Open Country AT3, this tire is coming with cut and chip resistant tread compounds which are molded into the symmetrical tread pattern as well as using an evenly distributed void area design. This pattern is claimed to enhance off-road traction and increase the block rigidity in order to serve a better dry handling or stability while also improving the comfort on the road to stay quiet. The aforementioned compound is combined with 3D multi-wave sipes to increase wet traction and stability.

They are very good at loose dirt and typical off-road application but when it comes to gravel or rocks, we also think the Grappler is more reliable and able to grip the extreme surface to tow the vehicle away, especially if you also do some climbing. The large chunky pattern is also helpful when you are driving on mud and sand to give an extra grip.
In snowy conditions the Nitto Ridge Grappler and Toyo AT3 are also ideal but for lower temperature, we do highly recommend choosing tires with 3PMSF certification and unfortunately Ridge Grappler is not coming in this variant. Snow traction is good however, but Grappler shines better in deeper snow piles than AT3.

These tires are ideal for people who are going to drive on and off the road. Performance wise we do think you can go amazing with any of them but the Ridge Grappler is more suitable for the off-road section as it excels in this area. On the other hand AT3 from Toyo is probably better for daily application with some light adventure but, we do like that it can handle winter really well. In addition, it is unfortunate the Nitto doesn’t give the Ridge Grappler a treadwear warranty but only standard warranty for defects.
